Drop it!

A game for 2 or more players

This simple game gives practice of recognising and comparing fractions of a set of objects. It can very easily be adapted to give practice of comparing fractions with different denominators.

You will need

  • Double sided counters or coins
  • How to play

Decide whether to count red or yellow counters (heads or tails if playing with coins).

Each player picks up 10 counters, drops them, then works out what fraction of their counters are showing the chosen colour. The person with the largest fraction wins a point. The first player to get 3 points wins the game.

    Variations

  • Players may take a different number of counters each. This will then involve either reasoning to determine which fraction is larger, or finding a common denominator to change one fraction (e.g. if 5 and 10 counters are used) or both fractions (e.g. if 5 and 6 counters are used).
